Last weekend, my husband, son and I went to a sport show. There were lots of interesting campers, boats and vacation destinations. My son had the most fun feeding the ducks and quacking at them.

We are always looking for vacation spots that are good for long weekends. While there were a lot of new places for us to pick up a brochure, we couldn't get people to talk to us. They were tied up with their Kindle or talking with the other person staffing the booth.

A few of the booths had promotional giveaways. I always take them. They didn't buy them from me, but they bought them from someone like me so, in the long run, I'm working to keep my job and get new ideas for my customers. One booth was for a waterpark resort. They were giving away this beach ball.  It was a great way to get kids interested, but they only had 1 blown up. Didn't even get my son's attention for a glance.

I think it would be a great idea to have a prize  wheel. Pick 3 different promotional items that are the same value. Water bottles, flyers, koozies, and toys are great conversation starters. Everyone's a winner. Kids get a prize. While parents are standing in line, you get a chance to talk about your business.

I've worked tradeshows before and I know how tiring it is to stand up all day and be "on." (Mainlining caffeine and a hidden stash of candy are important.) I also know the importance of taking a break and checking out the other booths. Look at what other people are doing and take notes from both the successful and not so popular. Try to stay in front of your booth. and interact with people. The more involved you are...the more successful the show!

Tell me about your tradeshow experiences...
